Two powerful organizations, Nothing But Today and Max’s Mission, are harnessing the community and creativity of skateboarding to promote suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Recently, prominent skateboarders like Wes Kremer, Brandon Turner, and John Gardner joined local skaters in Illinois for two impactful events in Naperville and Chicago.
These events aimed to provide mental health education and create spaces where open, honest conversations could take place. Organized in memory of Max Wijangco, who tragically died by suicide at 15 in 2022, Max’s Mission works to empower individuals affected by suicide loss through education and outreach.
John Gardner of Nothing But Today explained the importance of meeting people where they feel most at ease.
“Skateparks and skate shops are places of refuge for so many people. That’s why we focus on creating safe spaces to have meaningful conversations about the challenges of life,” Gardner said.
John Gardner is well-known in the skateboarding community, not just for his skills but for his advocacy for mental health through skating. His efforts with Nothing But Today have already made a significant impact, proving that skateboarding is more than a sport—it’s a lifeline for many.

The Mission Behind Max’s Mission
Max’s Mission provides postvention support and resources to those affected by suicide loss. Their outreach and educational programs aim to foster healing and empower individuals to address mental health challenges in their communities.
Why Skateboarding?
Skateboarding offers a unique way to connect with people, breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity. Both organizations recognize the potential of skateboarding to promote mental well-being. Events like these highlight the profound impact that a shared passion for skating can have in bringing people together and supporting those who are struggling.
